The week brings hiking and Nordic walking, as well as an up-hill endurance race in the Alps. One route will lead hikers along vineyards in the north-east and another around a mysterious lake in the south of the country.

The Winetour, or Vinotour in Slovenian, is the first international Nordic walking route amid vineyards, a collaboration of the local tourist association from the town of Svečina, north of Maribor, and the neighbouring Austrian municipality of Ratsch an der Weinstrasse.

Offering three different routes (11, 21 or 24 km), the Winetour will take hikers across courtyards of Slovenian and Austrian wine-growing farms on Saturday. For more info, visit www.potka.si/nw_vinotour/

Those interested in Karst phenomena will be able to go on Sunday on a guided walk around Cerknica Lake, the biggest intermittent lake in the south-west of the country.

A guide will take them to the places which usually remain hidden to the untrained eye. More info at www.notranjski-park.si/novice-dogodki/23-tematska-nedelja-cerknisko-jezero-kot-ga-se-ne-poznate

A treat for endurance enthusiasts comes on Sunday with the 7th Storžič Vertical Kilometre. It will take a great deal of stamina to climb a vertical kilometre on Strožič, a 2,132-metre peak in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

The time-trial race starts not in the valley, but higher up the mountain, with organisers promising this is the steepest and one of the most beautiful routes in Slovenia. More info at www.turni.si
