The Programme Council of RTV Slovenija has appointed the current Chairman of the Supervisory Board Andrej Grah Whatmough as the new General Director. He received 18 out of 28 votes from programme councillors. His opponent in the second round, the director of TV Slovenija Natalija Gorščak, received nine votes.
In the first round, 28 programme councillors voted. Out of that, 14 supported Grah Whatmough, seven supported Gorščak, and six programme councillors voted for the third candidate, the current director Igor Kadunc. One ballot was invalid.
As none of the candidates received a sufficient number of votes, i.e. 15 out of 29, a second round of voting was held, in which Grah Whatmough and Gorščak competed. In the second round, 28 programme councillors voted. Grah Whatmough received 18 votes and Gorščak nine. One ballot was not valid.
The appointment of a new director general of RTVS is necessary because Kadunc’s mandate is coming to an end in April. The mandate of a Director General lasts for four years, and the selected candidate will replace him on April 25th.
Before the vote, the candidates presented their position on the situation and role of RTVS in the Slovenian media space, on the media legislation governing the position of the institute, and on key challenges in the field of programming, production and business processes as well as in the field of finance. Then, the programme councillors themselves had the opportunity to give their opinion on the presentations and candidates.
