The Karst is in flames again – the firemen will try a “counter fire”

By C. R.

Firefighters with the help of a helicopter were able to suppress the larger outbreak above Mirno on the Goriška Karst. A new fire that broke out at night on Veliki Ovčnjak hill in the municipality of Komen is partially under control, and firefighters are trying to prevent it from spreading to the deciduous forest area. The settlements are not threatened at the moment.

Komen Municipality Mayor Erik Modic informed the regional headquarters of Civil Protection (CZ) for North Littoral that the settlements are not threatened, and this is the most important thing at the moment.

The spokesman of the CZ regional headquarters for Northern Littoral, Ervin Čurlič, also wrote in the message that the fire is under control in the southern and western parts, and to the north and east they will try to use the so-called counter fire. With this, they would like to prevent the fire from spreading to areas of deciduous forest.

Two helicopters of the Slovenian Army are currently helping with the firefighting.

During the night, there was also a fire above the village of Šibelji in the municipality of Komen, on the Veliki Ovčnjak hill, and in the morning the firemen detected a more active focus also above Mirno. The firemen managed to suppress this, partly helped by the rain, which unexpectedly surprised the firemen and locals in the morning.
