Yesterday, a Joint Declaration on the Conference on the Future of Europe was signed by European Parliament President David Sassoli, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Prime Minister of Portugal António Costa, on behalf of the Presidency of the Council. This paves the way to launching a series of debates and discussions that will enable people from every corner of Europe to share their ideas to help shape Europe’s future. The Conference’s first plenary session is scheduled for Europe Day on 9 May and closes next spring.

During its EU Council Presidency, Slovenia will be actively engaged in the implementation of the Conference. In addition to the Prime Minister and the Slovenian representative on the Executive Board of the Conference, representatives of the Slovenian National Assembly will also participate.

Slovenia welcomes the launch of the Conference and the series of debates and discussions, which will initially take place digitally in view of the current epidemiological situation. The Conference provides an excellent opportunity for a comprehensive debate with citizens on the kind of European Union we need in the future. We anticipate issues such as: increasing the Union’s resilience to various forms of crises we have faced over the last decade; improving the EU’s competitiveness to create more jobs and increase investment in sectors where we need a technological breakthrough; strengthening the mechanisms for more effective strategic engagement of the European Union on the global stage, etc. We will take an active part in the debate both in Slovenia and at the EU level.
