In Ljubljana yesterday, Prime Minister Janez Janša met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, who is on an official visit to Slovenia.

The two sides assessed the bilateral relations between the two countries as very friendly and full of potential to strengthen cooperation, particularly with regards to economic cooperation. Figures for the last year show an increase in trade in goods. The Prime Minister highlighted the business forum to be held by Slovenia on 22 November at the Expo in Dubai, which will be an opportunity to establish closer ties between the Qatari and Slovenian business communities. The two sides agreed on the importance of the green transition. Green and carbon neutral investments will serve as the basis for future action.

The Slovenian Prime Minister and Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs also spoke about the issue of rising energy prices. Qatar remains one of the world’s leading suppliers of gas, the supply of which was not cut back during the pandemic nor the Gulf blockade of Qatar. The minister thanked Slovenia for all its support in the efforts to liberalise visa requirements with the EU. Qatar expressed its appreciation for Slovenia’s assistance and hope that Qatari citizens will be exempted from the visa requirement when entering the Schengen area in the near future.
