Prime Minister Janez Janša met today in Ljubljana with representatives of the European Muslim and Jewish Leadership Council, co-chaired by Dr Nedžad Grabus, Mufti of Sarajevo and former Mufti of Ljubljana, and Pinchas Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis and Chief Rabbi of Moscow.

In addition to Dr Nedžad Grabus and Community Rabbi of Vienna Schlomo Hofmeister, other senior religious leaders of the Islamic and Jewish communities from Austria, Italy, Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom were present, as well as Nevzet Porić, Mufti of the Islamic community in the Republic of Slovenia, and Elie Rosen, President of the Association of Jewish Communities of Graz, Austria, and Ljubljana.

The meeting with the Prime Minister was aimed at discussing the key priorities of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the rights of religious minorities and the dignity of people of all faiths in European society. The meeting also represented an important contribution to the dialogue between the various religious communities and the country holding the EU Council presidency. At the meeting, Prime Minister Janez Janša stressed the importance of religious freedom and the importance of dialogue between people of different faiths in promoting greater tolerance, respect and mutual understanding.

The European Muslim and Jewish Leadership Council is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to protect the universal right to freedom of religion and freedom of religious practice in Europe. Within the council, senior Muslim and Jewish religious leaders in Europe work to promote dialogue and peaceful coexistence between cultures and religions, and to foster a culture of respect between people of different faiths and religious identities.
