Nika, greased with billionaire money, will host a moralist who rants against billionaires

“I ask Nika Kovač whether, during the global workers’ revolution, we’ll also be expropriating privileged, inherited millionaire Mamdani, or does that only apply to those who earned their wealth through merit?” wrote commentator Iršič in response to the announcement by the March 8th Institute that American far-leftist Zohran Mamdani, who wants to simply “abolish” billionaires, would be visiting Slovenia.

The double standards of the March 8th Institute and its leader Nika Kovač have been well known for a long time. The most obvious example is the “fight” for clean drinking water. Not long ago, she led the charge in the referendum on water rights, but today she shows no concern about the construction of the so-called “sewage canal” (C0 channel), through which Ljubljana’s mayor Zoran Janković would contaminate the drinking water supply for hundreds of thousands of Ljubljana residents.

When the water referendum was on the table, Nika acted as a self-styled expert on the topic. Now, suddenly, she either does not know enough or refuses to speak out. Back in April, we reported that she and her fellow water defenders were avoiding the parliamentary inquiry into the controversial project like “the devil avoids the cross.” A similar pattern is playing out with the so-called fight “against capitalism.”

On its official X account, the March 8th Institute proudly announced that self-proclaimed billionaire-basher Zohran Mamdani is coming to Slovenia. He firmly believes that any society which creates billionaires is inherently corrupt. The American far-left politician would simply “abolish” billionaires. Slovenia does not really have any billionaires, it is too small. But we do have a slew of transitional millionaires, who got rich through privatisation and their ties to the post-socialist elite.

Nika Kovač’s blatant double standards

One such millionaire is undoubtedly Ljubljana’s mayor, Zoran Janković, but that does not seem to bother Nika in the slightest. Let’s recall: in the past, it was reported that Nika held a municipal job at Ljubljana’s Pionirski dom (a city-funded cultural institution). In that sense, it is understandable that she does not want to bite the hand that feeds her. Still, her hypocritical crusade against turbo-capitalists is hard to ignore. The Institute has publicly criticised multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos for his extravagant wedding, even though Nika, indirectly, received a scholarship funded by him.
