On the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that hit the United States of America, Minister Anže Logar and Chargé d’affaires of the U.S. Embassy Susan Falatko honoured the memory of nearly 3,000 innocent victims who lost their lives in a series of criminal acts orchestrated by Al-Qaeda extremists in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

Minister Logar said that the events of 11 September 2001 had affected not only the US, but also the transatlantic alliance and all those who fostered the universal human values of peace, security, freedom, dignity and tolerance. It was an attempt to break our spirit, but the alliance has become even stronger and more united.

Such horrific violence required a strong response. Slovenia has joined the broad international coalition in the fight against terrorism and remains committed to the principles of political, economic and religious freedom while promoting the rule of law and respect for human life.

The Minister underlined that Slovenia’s activities continue to place a strong focus on preventing terrorism and radicalisation. Slovenia cooperates with the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh, NATO and the European Union, and is also dedicated to combating terrorism in the Western Balkans.

Recognising the significant progress made in the global war on terror in the twenty years since the September attacks, Minister Logar stressed that much remained to be done. The threat of terrorism is ever changing and evolving, which is why we have to adapt and strengthen our common approach.

Slovenia will continue working closely with the United States and other allies and partners to defend our core values and our collective security.
