Despite reportedly intense efforts to secure an invitation for himself and Tina Gaber to attend the inauguration of the new U.S. President Donald Trump on January 20th, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob was left without one. However, two MPs from the SDS party did receive invitations.
In recent days, Golob’s cabinet reportedly made desperate efforts to secure an invitation for Golob to attend Trump’s inauguration. This task was primarily assigned to Slovenia’s ambassador to the U.S., Iztok Mirošič, but he was unsuccessful. It seems the Trump administration has not forgotten that Golob publicly and undiplomatically referred to Trump as undemocratic before the U.S. elections and expressed support for his opponent, Kamala Harris.
According to standard tradition, only Slovenia’s ambassador to the U.S., Mirošič, received an invitation to the inauguration.
However, two SDS MPs did receive invitations from the Republican Party. Žan Mahnič and Andrej Poglajen will be traveling to the U.S. Mahnič had already participated in events surrounding Trump’s first inauguration, where he and colleague Tomaž Lisec were invited to a dinner honouring Melania Trump.
