EU foreign ministers discussed ways of engaging with the Taliban, in particular in providing humanitarian aid and assistance to people in Afghanistan who want to leave, as they began a two-day informal meeting as part of Slovenia’s EU presidency at Brdo pri Kranju.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said the purpose of the meeting is to try to reach an agreement on coordinated engagement with the Taliban on the basis of certain conditions, and on the possibilities of cooperation with regional players. This does not mean recognition, he stressed. On Friday, the focus will be on EU-China relations, the EU’s approach towards the Gulf countries and o EU cooperation with the Indo-Pacific region.
