By: UKOM

Director-General of the Directorate for European Union Affairs Barbara Sušnik held bilateral consultations with Jean-Louis Thill, Director-General for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg via videoconference.

Director-General Sušnik presented the key topics of Slovenia’s EU Council Presidency, which mainly include addressing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, building the Union’s resilience and strategic autonomy, and the future of Europe. She stressed that the EU must strive to deal with various crises more effectively. In addition to health crises, there are other forms of modern security threats, such as large-scale cyberattacks. She emphasised the importance of a credible enlargement policy for the Union, reiterating that the Western Balkans should remain its geostrategic priority. Therefore, Slovenia will devote special attention to EU enlargement during the term of its Presidency.

The Directors-General exchanged views on the Conference on the Future of Europe, agreeing that it should be built on a quality discussion with citizens, as its conclusions will be crucial for the future development of Europe. They also paid attention to migration and the search for an agreement on the draft new Pact on Migration and Asylum.

Director-General Thill welcomed the priorities of the Slovenian Presidency and expressed readiness for further close cooperation between the two countries in coordinating views on European issues.

Directors-General Sušnik and Thill advocated further successful development of bilateral political relations and economic cooperation. Luxembourg’s direct investments in Slovenia amounted to 2 billion euros in 2019, placing it second among foreign investors.
