Slovenia has witnessed countless parliamentary inquiry commissions, particularly those dealing with healthcare and money laundering cases, where witnesses seemed to lose their memory.
As it appears, Asta Vrečko is now following the same path, as she seems to forget that it was precisely the government in which she served that increased defence spending, while Janez Janša’s government today is merely fulfilling commitments that had already been made.
It must be difficult for Asta Vrečko to accept that on 24 and 25 June 2025, she was a member of the government led by Robert Golob, which approved at the NATO summit an increase in defence expenditures. The time has now come to honour those commitments, and the new government has allocated an additional €300 million for defence. Yet Asta Vrečko apparently fails to recognise that this is not a decision made by Janez Janša, but rather a consequence of decisions taken by the government in which she herself served.
At the same time, the former minister overlooks the fact that even Janez Janša is not fully implementing all the commitments. If he were, Slovenia would be spending 5% of GDP on defence, a target that Robert Golob himself had boasted about. As has already been established, NATO is currently receiving the funding that was promised by Asta’s former boss, not the amount determined by Janez Janša’s government.
