VIDEO: Migrants battle border fence / Poland

By: V4 Agency

Without the border fence, the country would be experiencing a migration crisis, the defence minister said in response to criticisms of the fence.

Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak stressed in a Twitter post the importance of the fence which has been under construction for months on the Polish-Belarusian border. He also commented on criticism of the temporary line of defence, writing “Without the fence (…) a situation similar to the 2015 migrant crisis would have emerged in Poland.”

The defence minister reported that more than 3,000 soldiers are currently defending the Polish-Belarusian frontier. Poland started construction of the temporary fence in July, in response to the severe migratory pressure developing along that section of the border.

Dominik Tarczynski, MEP for the right-wing conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS), published a video on Saturday depicting the situation on the border. The footage shows several illegal migrants trying to damage the razor wire fence, while others can be heard shouting to Polish border guards that they want to go to Germany.
