The Italian Bishops Conference (CEI) and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini on Thursday sparred over the latter’s recent decree cracking down on migrants and upping security.
CEI chief Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti said he was »worried about the abrogation of stay permits for humanitarian motives and also the reduction of these permits because in this way there is a risk oof exposing many people to an uncertain future, as well as expulsion linked to a first-instance conviction which does not seem fully in line with the Constitution«.
Salvini replied: »I’m happy there are so many people in the Vatican worried about those landing in Italy but my wages are paid by 60 million Italians who want to live in their homes with more peace of mind.«
»Less clandestine immigration means more security for the Italians«.
