Key to migration management is a comprehensive approach

By: UKOM

The regular annual meeting of the European Migration Network (EMN) took place in Ljubljana as part of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU on 5 and 6 October 2021. Participants discussed the EU’s preparedness for future migration flows.

At yesterday’s opening of the meeting, Minister of the Interior Aleš Hojs held a video address in which he pointed out that mixed migration continues to be an enormous challenge in the EU and beyond. “The need for integrated border management to prevent abuses of the asylum system is more pronounced than ever before,” said the minister, underlining the importance of reliable information on migration and international protection. “In this day and age, we all the more value the reliability of the information that we can use to assess where we are and to plan for the future,” said Hojs, thanking the EMN for the work it has done thus far.

Director-General of the Migration Directorate Nataša Potočnik presented the conclusions of the meeting in a press statement: “According to the experience and insights of the participants, the timely exchange of information is key. Furthermore, we need to make best use of our EU agencies and available tools and resources. The most important aspect, however, is a comprehensive approach to migration management (return, control of the EU’s external borders, rapid and efficient asylum procedures, regular migration), which is one of the priorities of Slovenia’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.”
