Hungary: Border violations at record high

From Friday to Sunday this past week, police and soldiers took action against 1246 border violators in Hungary, according to a statement issued by the National Police Headquarters on Monday.

According to statistics publicly available on the police website, soldiers and police stopped and escorted back 537, 378 and 331 illegal foreign nationals through the temporary security border on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. In addition, authorities apprehended two border violators at the Croatian, Romanian and Ukrainian borders, as well as inside the country, and launched legal proceedings against them.

During last week a total of 2,865 border violators – the highest number this year – were caught and escorted back to the other side of the border.

In the previous week, from 18 to 24 October, the number of apprehended border violators was 2,572. In addition, authorities apprehended seven border violators were apprehended last week at the Croatian, Romanian and Ukrainian borders, as well as inside the country, and launched legal proceedings against them. Proceedings have also been initiated against 32 individuals suspected of human smuggling, according to the figures published by police.
