Number of Illegal Migrants in Austria Increased in July & August

Illegal migration in Austria has shown a general decrease in 2019. Yet, since July 2020, the number of irregular migrants heading to Austria has been increasing again, Austria’s smuggling report of 2019 has revealed.

According to the smuggling report, a total of 3,590 persons attempted to enter Austria illegally, between July and August 2019. Compared to the same period this year, the number marks an increase of 800 seizures or 22.28 per cent.

The report stressed that in 2020, between July and August, a total of 4,390 persons have attempted to enter Austria in irregular ways, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The number of arrests of persons who sought to enter unlawfully in Austria has marked a decrease, in 2020, since the peak in 2015. The Coronavirus pandemic situation also affected the decline in the number of illegal migrants during this year.

Austria’s smuggling report has revealed that a total of 2,469 persons smuggled were registered during last year, marking a 13 per cent decline, compared to 2018.
