As British MPs earlier this week argued about newly proposed legislation that would stop terrorists from being released early, an ex-minister revealed that over 160 convicted terrorists have been released early from UK prisons in the last seven years alone.
Sir John Hayes, who served as the Minister of State for Security until 2016, told lawmakers that 163 convicted terrorists have been released early in the last seven years, The Sun reports.
The words from former Minister of State for Security came as MPs debated emergency legislation, that if passed, would prevent convicted terrorists from being released earlier.
“Leaving aside the short sentences, the more serious terrorist prisoners have been released in significant numbers,” Sir John said.
“Just imagine the effect on our security services and police of having to deal with the possible consequences of those releases,” he added.
