Young doctors on the side-lines of the medical strike: “The government is stringing the citizens along!”

“The government of the Republic of Slovenia is stringing the citizens along, as it operates towards further degradation of the accessible healthcare system, and their words about the priority of healthcare reform are empty. Similarly, the government is lying to healthcare workers, as it does not adhere to commitments it has repeatedly signed,” stated Young Doctors in a press release on today’s medical strike.

“The strike should have occurred years ago: for accessible healthcare alongside comprehensive healthcare reform and for the normalisation of working conditions that would retain doctors and other public healthcare employees. In this time, the conditions have further deteriorated, and unfortunately, the cost of this is also measured in lost lives,” they added.

As they emphasise, today’s statement from the Minister of Health perfectly illustrates the government’s evasiveness. She stated that the strike is unnecessary, as an agreement with Fides (Physicians’ Trade Union) can be reached in a short time. “We believe that this would be difficult if they were not willing to meet with them before the warning strike. Actions count, not words!”
