The policy of Robert Golob was clear, and he had openly announced it even before taking office as prime minister: too much money should not be left in people’s wallets.

Throughout its term, it became clear that this policy was aimed solely at ensuring that as much money as possible flowed into the state treasury, from which NGOs and certain trade unions were financed through various channels, with the objective of helping the government remain in power.

Now that a centre-right government has come to power and wants to return at least some of that hard-earned money to citizens, the very same actor, have become the loudest opponents of such measures. They frequently claim that the proposed changes benefit only the wealthy, while they themselves control large sums of money that come not from their own work but from public funds. That this is one reason why they obscure the actual details of the proposed reforms.

When voters go to the referendum on 6 December they should be aware of at least one fact: Slovenia applies one of the highest VAT rates on basic foodstuffs. While neighbouring countries tax such products at rates between 4% and 5%, Slovenia’s rate is 9.5%. Trade unions appear to believe that citizens do not deserve lower taxes because, in their view, people would become “too wealthy” as a result!?
