On Thursday, the European Commission proposed to the Member States of the European Union to support Ukraine and grant it candidate status. As we have already reported, the countries have not yet formed a unified position on the status of Ukraine. Ukrainians have the most support from eastern countries, while some countries even want to impose additional conditions, and Denmark and Portugal are said to be the most sceptical about the whole thing. We also reported that, as far as Slovenia is concerned, support for Ukraine is ensured. The new Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tanja Fajon, recently wrote the following on Twitter: “I am glad that Ukraine’s dream of an EU future is coming true. Congratulations also to Moldova and Georgia for receiving confirmation from the European Commission that they are on the right track. I also fully support the earliest possible progress of the Western Balkan countries on their EU path.” With this tweet, she revealed all the hypocrisy she has.
Namely, in one of her last votes as a Member of the European Parliament, the Foreign Minister voted in favour of a resolution aimed at postponing the granting of candidate status to Ukraine. Thus, together with her party colleague Milan Brglez, she became one of the rare few people in the EU who did not recognise the price that has already been paid and is still being paid by Ukrainians for their dream of Europe. And by the way, all of the MEPs who belong to the political group of the European People’s Party voted against the resolution for the postponement.
The resolution in question was adopted at the time when Janez Janša and Mateusz Morawiecki addressed a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in which they defended the position that Ukraine should become a member of the European Union by 2030. They were the first to propose this. The granting of this status would give the shocked Ukrainians momentum, strategic hope and a motive to persevere in defending their homeland, sovereignty and democracy. “It is time for quick and courageous decisions. The battle for Europe is ongoing. The history of the last two decades teaches us that if the EU does not expand, someone else will. We are now paying the price for ignoring this. We should learn from this, as the cost of ignorance will only increase in the future,” the letter reads.
Later, Janša and Morawiecki, along with their Czech counterpart, Petr Fiala, also went to Kyiv. With her vile response to this, Tanja Fajon once again found herself on the wrong side of history, we wrote at the time. And we were right. This was confirmed by the Prime Minister of Germany, the social democrat Olaf Scholz, who, together with the French President Macron and Italian Prime Minister Draghi, went to visit Kyiv this Thursday. And Tanja Fajon has not said anything about it.

It is a good thing that the Minister of Foreign Affairs has changed her position. Was she by the influence of Milan Kučan, Danilo Turk and the other members of the pro-Russian political lobby at the time, who suggested that Ukraine should be unilaterally disarmed, and proposed that Golob stops all of Slovenia’s military support for the country in war? Perhaps she did not even know what was going on and merely acted in the heat of the internal political struggle, thus voting against everything that the previous Prime Minister advocated, even if it saved lives? Or perhaps we simply have a Foreign Minister who has no clear views and votes based on what someone whispers in her ear? That would probably be the most tragic.
