The sanctions against Russia don’t work, they just increase hardship for the American people, the Democratic Party’s former congresswoman said. Former US President Donald Trump has also sharply criticised the new sanctions by the US.
The reality is that these sanctions don’t work, whether they are imposed now or later, Tulsi Gabbard, the Democratic Party’s former congresswoman told Tucker Carlson on Fox News. “What we do know is that they will increase suffering and hardship for the American people,” she added.
“That’s the whole problem with the Biden administration. They are so focused on how we punish Putin, that they don’t care and they are not focused on what is actually in the best interest of the American people. So when Biden stands there and looks directly into the camera and says, you know, ‘defending freedom will cost us’, what he should be saying instead is, looking directly into the American people’s eyes, and say ‘this will cost you,’” Ms Gabbard said in the show.
In Ms Gabbard’s opinion, the sanctions won’t hurt Biden or his vice president, neither will they harm the Russian or American power elites. It is the people who are going to suffer, the American and the Russian people alike, she said. People working hard every day in the US facing the drastically increasing prices at the gas pump and at the supermarket, the politician explained, adding that the hardships people are dealing with now, with Biden’s sanction plan, are only going to get worse.
US President Joe Biden has announced sanctions against Moscow in four areas as the “first tranche.” Sanctions have been imposed on two major Russian financial institutions and Russia’s government has been cut off from Western financing. In addition, the US has sanctioned specific influential members of Russia’s elite and their families, and will coordinate with allies and do everything to halt the operating license of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipline.
Former US President Donald Trump has slammed the US measures. In his view, the Biden administration opted for imposing weak sanctions while allowing Russia to grow rich, with tripling oil prices.
“Russia has become very very rich during the Biden administration, with oil prices doubling and soon to be tripling and quadrupling. The weak sanctions are insignificant […] Putin is not only getting what he always wanted, but also getting, because of the oil and gas surge, richer and richer, Donald Trump wrote in his statement, recalling that the US was energy-independent during his term, an independence the country had never obtained before, with oil prices remaining low.
