The National Council voted a suspensive veto on the euthanasia law

By: Moja Dolenjska

The National Council voted a suspensive veto on the euthanasia law.

At the extraordinary session, the National Council voted with 20 votes in favour and 9 against to impose a veto on the law on assistance in euthanasia, voluntary termination of life, or the law on medical poisoning of patients. The National Assembly will therefore have to reconsider the law, which it approved last week. To reaffirm the law, at least 46 members of parliament will need to vote in favour.

The proposal for a suspensive veto on the law was submitted by a group of National Council members, with Danijel Kastelic as the first signatory. They believe that as a society and as individuals, we should ask ourselves whether it is right to take the side of promoting death instead of life.

Members of the coalition (Svoboda, SD, and Levica) passed the law last week with 50 votes in favour, 34 against, and 3 abstentions. The SDS and NSi parties voted against the law.

The law is highly controversial. Medical poisoning of patients, “which the radical left-wing parties of the Golob government want to impose together,” as described by Aleš Primc, has also been firmly opposed by doctors.

The roll-call vote from last week’s session is available at the link: Coalition passed the law “for medical poisoning of patients.”
