The lists of candidates for the European elections show the close alignment of mainstream media with political parties

As Svoboda and Levica have also declared the lists they will run on in the European elections, the leading candidates for all six parliamentary parties are known. However, only NSi has officially submitted its list so far, with Matej Tonin at the top, and Vesna, who placed Mayor Vladimir Prebilič at the top.

Previous elections were also marked by numerous female candidates at the top of the lists, but there were even more crossovers from “independent” media to the lists of centre-left parties. This revealed a significant alignment of the largest media outlets with left-wing political parties. Tanja Fajon (formerly from RTVS) and Irena Joveva (formerly from POP TV) were successful in the elections, but Violeta Tomić (formerly from RTVS), despite being a top candidate for the entire Levica group at the European level, failed for Levica. Tomić is attempting to run again this year, but not for Levica, while it is still not entirely clear whether she will be on the SD list, led by Matjaž Nemec, who has humorously been dubbed “Nitka” since the COVID times due to his struggles with mowing the grass.

The leading candidates at the top of the lists are important because they are usually elected. However, there have been some exceptions in history, where candidates from lower positions have defeated the leading candidates. For example, former RTVS correspondent from Brussels Tanja Fajon defeated Igor Lukšič in the SD, which led to Lukšič’s later dismissal as the president of the SD. Conversely, Borut Pahor, who was then the president of the National Assembly and SD, was elected as a Member of the European Parliament from the last position, even though he did not particularly desire it. However, SD is a somewhat unique party. There have not been as many such events in other parties.
