At a closed session today, the government discussed the situation with the “Russian aggression against Ukraine”, Prime Minister Janez Janša said on Twitter. It also took decisions to approve current NATO measures and to activate the necessary emergency services. As Janša added, it would inform the parliamentary committees for defence and foreign policy about the resolutions as soon as possible.

Earlier, the Prime Minister said that Slovenia, together with its allies in relation to NATO and the European Union, strongly condemned Russia’s unprecedented military aggression against Ukraine. “Russia must immediately withdraw its army and fully respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” where a no-fly zone must be established, he wrote.

In another tweet, Prime Minister Janša assessed that the Russian attack was a betrayal that would have huge geopolitical consequences. “Many countries will now try to develop their nuclear arsenal,” as there are no more realistic arguments against this. The world has entered a hot hybrid war with unprecedented consequences, he tweeted.

According to the announcements, the Prime Minister is expected to attend a crisis meeting of EU leaders in Brussels today regarding the Ukrainian crisis due to the aggravation of the security situation. Consultations are also taking place within NATO. From there, he is expected to continue his journey to Ukraine, but it is not yet known whether he will be able to reach Kiev, as the airspace over Ukraine is closed.

Shortly after noon, Janša tweeted that he had talked to his Ukrainian counterpart Denis Shmihal about the situation after the start of the Russian aggression, which aims to decapitate the Ukrainian state and establish a puppet government. “But Ukraine is struggling and needs all our help. The battle for Ukraine is a battle for Europe,” the Slovenian Prime Minister wrote.
