In the first nine months of this year, the police dealt with 15,590 illegal border crossings, which is an increase of almost 115 percent, compared to the 7,260 illegal border crossings that happened in the same period last year. According to police statistics, the largest number of illegal migrants continues to be from Afghanistan, with Indian and Burundian nationals also making it to the top.
The highest number of illegal border crossings continues to be recorded in the area of the Koper Police Directorate, where almost half of all cases have been recorded, while the number of illegal border crossings continues to rise in the area of the Police Directorate Novo mesto, where almost a third of all cases have been recorded.
The number of pending expressed intentions to apply for international protection has increased more than threefold compared to the same period last year. The total number of such applications is 14,981. The number of Afghans coming to our country has continued to grow since last year, while an increasing number of applications are being received from refugees from India, Burundi and Cuba, who are able to enter Serbia legally by plane and then continue their journey to Western Europe. In addition, 6,941 applications for temporary protection were processed, almost all of which were from Ukrainian nationals.
Slovenian Press Agency has published tables with data on the number of illegal border crossings in the first nine months of 2022 and a comparison with the same period last year by nationality, by police administration unit in the area in which the illegal migrants entered the country, and a table on the number of persons returned by foreign security authorities to Slovenian authorities and by Slovenian authorities to foreign authorities. Tables on the number of applications for international protection and the number of applications granted, as well as the number of applicants and their accommodation as of the 10th of October 2022, were also published.
