The Austrians lowered VAT on food – look how Golob’s party reacted …

By: Celjski glasnik

If the Freedom Movement dismissed proposals to lower VAT as “populism” just three months ago, today they would probably grab them with both hands and beat their chests about how much they have done.

But in Austria we see a completely different story, because they understand that lowering VAT on basic foodstuffs is not populism, it is taking care of people’s well‑being.

While Austria is working on reducing VAT on essential foods, Golob’s team is busy figuring out how to squeeze as much as possible from people before the elections. The irony is that Slovenia had the exact same proposal on the table a few months ago, but Minister Mateja Čalušić dismissed it as populism. It would be interesting to see what she would say about such a proposal now, right before the elections.

“When we proposed this three months ago, Čalušić said it seemed very populist to her. And Golob said he would adopt ‘systemic’ measures against high prices. Smarter than Austria, these Freedom Movement folks,” NSi MP wrote.
