The leadership of Sviz sent a call to all members employed in education, science, and culture, urging them to sign a petition by the March 8th Institute, led by left-wing political activist Nika Kovač. In the petition, Kovač’s institute calls on the European Union to terminate the trade agreement with Israel and to stop the alleged genocide taking place in Gaza.

The petition call was signed by the president of the Sviz Main Committee, Marjana Kolar, and the union’s general secretary, Branimir Štrukelj, and was sent to members and the public this morning. In doing so, Kolar and Štrukelj also urged members to share the institute’s petition further.

When exactly the teachers’ union began involving itself in global political affairs is unclear, nor is it known whether such actions fall within its official scope of activity. What is known, however, is that the union’s general secretary, Branimir Štrukelj, was a parliamentary candidate on the Levica party’s list. Nika Kovač was also previously a member of the same party.
