Prime Minister Janez Janša nominates new Minister of Health, Janez Poklukar

By: gov.si

Prime Minister Janez Janša today submitted to the National Assembly a nomination of the new Minister of Health; his proposed candidate is Janez Poklukar.

Janez Poklukar received his medical degree from the Medical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana and started working at the Jesenice General Hospital. In early 2013, he became the Head of the Department for Internal Medicine, where he was responsible for the organisational, professional, and business management of the department. In 2014, he was appointed Acting Director and later full term Director of the Jesenice General Hospital, which he successfully managed and completed its financial restructuring until July 2019. In August 2019, he took over the management of the University Medical Centre in Ljubljana, the largest health institution in the region and the country, where he encountered a difficult financial situation of the hospital, restructuring procedures and challenges caused by the growing SARS CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) epidemic. Under his leadership, the hospital successfully faced the demanding situation and managed to ensure effective treatment and care of patients with good organisation, cooperation and knowledge of the relevant issues. In ten days, the management managed to complete the renovation of the premises that had been going on for 12 years and to put them into service in the most critical moments.

In his work, Janez Poklukar set high standards and demonstrated high managerial and professional competencies, as well as excellent knowledge of the Slovenian health care system, its advantages and disadvantages.

In the justification for Poklukar’s candidacy, Prime Minister Janez Janša added that he considered Janez Poklukar a suitable candidate for the Minister of Health and asked the National Assembly to ensure that the activities necessary for the appointment of the new Minister are carried out as soon as possible.
