Peter Niedermuller’s racist comments on live television

On 26 January, Peter Niedermuller, DK politician, mayor of Budapest 7th district made a racist attack on European way of life, families and Christians during a discussion in ATV. The programme was a live broadcast where the former MEP said: “If we look at what remains, if you take these hatreds away… what we just listed: non-Hungarians, others, migrants, Roma, whoever, then what remains at the center is a terrifying creature: these white, Christian, heterosexual men – and also women. This is the concept of family in Hungary.”

His comments outraged many in Hungary. Government measures in support of families and Fidesz’s stance on preserving Christian culture and identity enjoy overwhelming support among Hungarians. It is unacceptable for anyone to discriminate against any group of society, especially on the basis of faith, religion, skin color or sexual orientation.

International media who are usually eager to report from Hungary are silent, so are NGOs and so-called human rights defenders otherwise first to complain about freedom in Hungary. A large protest took place in front of the mayor’s office who refuses to resign. Although attacks on Christians are not always so overt, public figures on the Left however are regularly making demeaning comments about Churches, Church institutions and religious people.
