“Vladimir Prebilič talks about what is currently wrong in Slovenia, yet in the same breath insists he would form a coalition with the very same parties that currently make up the government of the Republic of Slovenia. Just another leftist swindler serving his own pockets and ego, then. Not Rebirth, but Ruin!”

This is what Žan Mahnič, MP of the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), wrote on X.

Mahnič was commenting on statements made by former mayor of Kočevje, Vladimir Prebilič, who is in the process of founding his own political party. Until recently, he had announced the party would be called Gremo (“Let’s Go”), but now he is promoting the name Preporod (“Rebirth”).

Reactions to what many are calling the “new face of Milan Kučan” have been widespread across social media platforms like X. The sentiment is mixed – some view Prebilič as an “opportunist” or a “left-wing alternative,” others as a “scam.” A prevailing interpretation is that his party is intended to redirect voters away from Robert Golob’s Freedom Movement toward Prebilič’s new platform.

Among the comments circulating online:

– Rebirth translates to the deep state swapping its face. To reborn so to speak.

– Just another Kučan loyalist. If we do not get rid of them in the next elections, there is no hope left. We do not even deserve an independent Slovenia!

– I doubt he will succeed. But if he does, I am done with Slovenia.

– The former mayor of Kočevje and MEP who speaks Serbian in the EU Parliament probably meant Rebirth as a revival of the old system that is infiltrating every corner of the state.

– Reincarnation – judging by the people he has dragged into this party.

Ahead of the party congress scheduled for Wednesday in Kočevje, Prebilič has assembled a core team made up of politicians from various backgrounds – mostly from LMŠ and SAB. Publicly mentioned key figures include: Brane Golubović, former head of the LMŠ parliamentary group, previously affiliated with LDS and SAB, Robert Pavšič, former LMŠ MP, later part of Freedom, Mitja Bervar, former president of the Democratic Party of Slovenia (DS), Marija Pirnat, former state secretary at the Ministry of Health under Alenka Bratušek’s government, closely aligned with LMŠ.
