In the second round of presidential elections, the New Slovenia party (Nova Slovenija – NSi) will support Dr Anže Logar, the party’s president, Matej Tonin, said on Wednesday after the meeting of the party’s Council.
President of the New Slovenia party, Matej Tonin, said that the party council had adopted two decisions. The first was that the party calls on all its members, sympathisers and supporters to take part in the elections. The second was that the party would support Dr Anže Logar in the second round of the presidential elections, although he is running as an independent candidate who collected signatures from voters in order to file his candidacy but has already received the support of the Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka – SDS) and the Slovenian People’s Party (Slovenska ljudska stranka – SLS) in the first round of the elections.
Regarding the candidacy of Janez Cigler Kralj from the NSi party, the Council assessed that he had performed well in the campaign, thus increasing the visibility of the New Slovenia party and strengthening its recognisability and public support. According to Tonin, it is also indicated in the public opinion polls conducted by
Mediana and Valina, “that the New Slovenia party has strengthened and that it now reaches over ten percent of the voters, which was also our short-term goal.”
Tonin attributes the 4.36 percent support achieved by Cigler Kralj to, among other things, the tactical voting of the party’s usual voters and supporters, “which has also been confirmed by other public opinion agencies, such as Parsifal.”
The New Slovenia party has new leadership The party’s Council also elected new party leadership, the Slovenian Press Agency reports. Tonin nominated Cigler Kralj as the first Vice-President and Vida Čadonič Špelič as the second Vice-President. He nominated Robert Ilc as the party’s Secretary-General and Matjaž Trontelj, Mateja Ribič and Janez Pogorelc as the three members of the Executive Council. In proposing the latter, he stressed that he wanted to send a clear message that NSi is not a party of one mind and that there is room for those who think differently from the party leadership.
