How a frontline fighter against capitalism is “powered” by global capital

By: Domen Mezeg (Nova24tv)

Nika Kovač claims to fight against worker exploitation and capitalism.

Yet among her (former) donors is the Obama Foundation, which in 2021 received $100 million from one of the richest men on Earth – Jeff Bezos. He is a ruthless exploiter, known for running a system where workers are virtually denied bathroom breaks during shifts. So, Nika Kovač is fighting capitalism with money from a turbo-capitalist.

Far-left activists like Nika Kovač (closely connected to the radical Levica party – the March 8th Institute was co-founded by gay activist and current minister Simon Maljevac) believe they are fighting against the “evil capitalism.” Nika Kovač herself has highlighted this: “Whenever we speak of some feminist struggle, we are also fighting against the capitalist social system that promotes this inequality. It often happens that violence is committed by someone who holds economic power, symbolic power, or is a bearer of knowledge.”

Workers are not allowed bathroom breaks, they urinate in bottles and trash cans

The most tragically ironic part is that she is financially supported, indirectly, by none other than a “ruthless capitalist.” MEP Branko Grims pointed to billionaire and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. According to Forbes, Bezos is the third richest person on Earth. He is also far from a role model when it comes to the labour rights that Nika Kovač claims to champion.

The fantasy of fighting for workers’ rights

“Workers do not dare go to the bathroom, because they must meet strict quotas set by their superiors. So, they urinate in bottles or trash cans, saving the time they would otherwise spend walking to the restroom,” one can read online. In this context, it is worth noting that Bezos is one of the biggest donors to the Obama Foundation, to which he gave $100 million in November 2021.

An indirect supporter of Nika Kovač’s activism

If we add the fact that it was the Obama Foundation that awarded Nika Kovač a fellowship (for the academic year 2021–2022), the circle is complete: Jeff Bezos is an indirect supporter of the leftist activism embodied by Nika Kovač.

“Casting out demons with the prince of demons”

Nika Kovač’s fighting is about as sincere as comrade turbo-capitalist Zoran Janković’s claim that capitalism will collapse. To put it in biblical terms: “Nika Kovač casts out demons with Beelzebul, the prince of demons.”
