Life is a gift, euthanasia is failure,” Archbishop Juan José Omella, president of the Episcopal Conference of Spain said, reacting to a law on regulating active euthanasia that was adopted by the Spanish parliament on Thursday.

The parliament in Spain has recently adopted the so-called Organic Law on legalising active euthanasia with a sweeping majority. Earlier, the Spanish bishops’ conference has criticised the proposed legislation, questioning its “suspiciously swift” implementation in the midst of a pandemic.

In a recent interview, Archbishop José Omella underlined the importance of allocating more resources to hospices and so-called palliative care, so that “people do not suffer at the end of lives.” In pains me to hear that “the administrations is cutting aid to social entities by 15 percent,” he added.

“If people feel that they are surrounded by others who help them and and love them, then they don’t want to die,” said the archbishop, arguing in support of upholding poeple’s right to live.
