The continually updated virtual exhibition “Pioneers of Slovenian Modern Architecture – Fabiani, Plečnik and Vurnik – Forms for a New Democracy” is being rounded off with an exhibition at the National Museum of Slovenia and a comprehensive monograph on the three great Slovenian architects produced by Bojana Čampa in Stane Jeršič.
The virtual exhibition was opened on 10 May 2021 with Maks Fabiani’s unique creation, Ferrari Garden in the village of Štanjel, and closed on 15 December 2021 with Jože Plečnik’s Triple Bridge in Ljubljana. Every day, a new photograph of an architectural creation from the treasure trove of rich architectural heritage by three Slovenian architectural contemporaries was posted on the Ministry of Culture’s website and social media channels. We got to know the architects through over 190 photographs and seven videos and took a walk with them in Ljubljana, Kranj, Celje, Črna vas, Brezje and Topol pri Medvodah in all seasons.
The authors of the exhibition, the photographer Stane Jeršič and the art historian Bojana Čampa, said that the project “Pioneers of Slovenian Modern Architecture” had a holistic approach from the onset. When planning the project, they started from the idea that “this important period of Slovenian architecture has not yet been comprehensively addressed in a form presenting works by Fabiani, Plečnik and Vurnik side-by-side. At the same time, the book was a challenge of conducting an in-depth expert research of the most important period of Slovenian modern architecture.” According to the authors, the project has gradually developed through the virtual exhibition on the ministry’s website and social media channels, therefore throughout the entire work process, up to the final content and visual design. They added that later on they “consulted various experts who showed their enthusiasm both for the design and realisation of the project. It fills us with great pride that academician and architect Marko Mušič wrote the foreword to the monograph ‘Fabiani Plečnik Vurnik – Forms for a New Democracy’, which he entitled ‘Architecture as the chalice of democracy’.”
The photographic exhibition is set up as permanent virtual exhibition at the ministry’s website.
The exhibition and book project will be open to the public in the entrance hall of the National Museum of Slovenia from 16 December 2021 to 8 May 2022. In addition to selected photographs (each architect is being presented through 12 photographs), the comprehensive monograph will also be on display.
