In these difficult times, we mostly read only negative comments and predictions for our country, which is completely understandable, as it is hard to find kind words for the current situation.
However, I believe that we Slovenians often allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by negativity, which makes us apathetic. We lack the strength to take concrete action; we just sigh and tell ourselves that things will get better. That is why I have decided to write something encouraging this time – perhaps even inspiring someone to view the current bleak situation from a slightly different perspective. In the end, I can even thank Golob’s government because its destructive policies have motivated me to become politically active at the young age of 23. Why? Because as a citizen of our small Slovenia, I cannot just stand by and watch as our home is being destroyed before our very eyes. Would you be able to stand still while someone recklessly loots your house or apartment?
Slovenians must realise that we, too, bear responsibility for the state of our country. I am not comparing or equating you with the thieves in power – I just want to emphasise that, in the end, we are the ones who hold the power in our hands. We are the ones who have the right, at any moment, to demand the resignation of harmful individuals, and we are the ones who can work together to create a better home for all of us. I know, these may seem like utopian thoughts, but the fact is that the problem lies within us. Those in power understand they are dealing with a passive nation, one they can manipulate as they please, without facing any consequences. So why not surprise them for a change?
I understand that we Slovenians still carry fear – an old, unprocessed trauma – but one day, we must overcome our own barriers and break free from the vicious cycle we have been trapped in for decades. Given the seismic shifts happening in the world right now, I believe our time has also come. Regardless of ideological beliefs, we must unite and fight together for a better future.
In the United States, people have firmly rejected malicious policies and chosen someone who will truly work for the ordinary citizen and, ultimately, for the good of the entire world. In Serbia, we are witnessing a magnificent mass uprising against an autocratic regime that is collapsing before our eyes. We have a historic opportunity to choose courage over division and complacency – but we must not wait too long, as such opportunities are rare. Stepping out of our comfort zone is always difficult, but let’s consider what is at stake: increasing taxes for a system that provides poor or no services, lower wages, higher utility bills, persecution of entrepreneurs, doctors being driven away and the healthcare system being systematically dismantled, incitement and division between first- and second-class citizens, deaf ears to vulnerable groups, escalating Roma issues, and an overall decline in security in our country. Are we willing to pay such a high price just to avoid lifting a finger?
Perhaps I am moralising too much now, but I simply want to convey to those reading this that we have nothing left to fear. Fear is the weapon that a small elite has used to control us for so long, and we must no longer allow it. We must never be afraid to stand on the side of truth and justice. We must not be afraid to speak when everyone else remains silent. We are here to claim our rightful place under the sun and ensure the best possible future for our descendants. And we can only achieve this together – only then will we truly be able to move mountains. I can say with certainty that I will continue to fight for what is right. What about you? Are you with me?
