MMC quietly removed the graphic showing party shares this morning, but without any explanation or apology to readers

By: Peter Jančič (Spletni časopis)

Twelve hours later, RTV Slovenia still has not explained why, in its presentation of Mediana’s recalculated party shares into parliamentary seats, it claimed that only seven parties would enter parliament, even though Mediana’s own data, on which the calculation was based, show eight.

Pirates and Resni.ca were measured at the same share, yet Resni.ca would “cross” the threshold while the Pirates would remain outside. On top of that, Levica together with Vesna were assigned more seats than the Democrats, even though Levica would receive a smaller share. The number of seats for SDS was also shown differently in two separate graphics. The mistake was not only made on the MMC web portal, the error also appeared in the main TVS news broadcast at 7 p.m., and in all RTV Slovenia outlets that repeated the report.

The fact that their seat calculation does not mathematically match the parties’ percentages, and that everything is wrong elsewhere as well, is quite embarrassing. Even more so because they have not corrected it properly or explained it to readers and viewers.

The overview of how much support each party received, which casts an odd light on the seat‑allocation calculation, was quietly removed from the MMC website this morning. This one:

The graphic has disappeared, but all the data in the text remain, as does the mismatch between party shares and the seat calculation.

I asked RTV Slovenia for an explanation of how these mathematical miracles were even possible. I will publish it once I receive it. Although viewers were already pointing out the absurdity last night, it is unusual that TVS did not publish a correction by the morning and that they decided to remove the graphic without any explanation or corrections to the text, in which the figures from the removed graphic still remain.
