There are people in this country who are not talked about. And they also talk less. You never see them on TV screens, on newspaper pages, in the glare of headlights. No, they are from another world and from another dough. Governments can change, pandemics can ravage, and media parrots can scream that the world is going to hell – but they do not seem to care.
These are the people who just do not stay at home. Because they have work that needs to be done. These are the people, my dears, who are the reason behind why our politicians, doctors, and teachers still receive salaries, our pensioners their pensions, and our students their scholarships. These are the people who do not look for excuses that they did not know something, that they were not capable of something, or could not predict something… Because they know that ultimately there is no one who will do their work for them. Finding excuses is a luxury for politicians, unions, and public officials. For them it is not. Whether there is quarantine or not, whether the government provides them with safeguards or not, whether someone cares for them or not, they will come to their jobs despite the pandemic of the century, and start the machines, grab a shovel, sit behind a wheel, replace that bearing, patch a tire, do their job. Where there is a problem, they will find a solution, and they will often do it for a salary under a thousand, after the state, comfortable “culturists” and modern kings from Betajnova street cut off half of it. Maybe their word is rough and hard, and the media would censor them after just a few seconds of conversation as they always say what they think. But these are the people behind the reason why Slovenia did not collapse like a pile of disaster in 2020. They are the reason why store shelves are still full, and why money is still flowing into the budget. Because when everyone else hides, the responsibility to propel the wheels of life forward lies on the shoulders of a few daring. They are the real heroes of our year 2020. And one day, I hope, they will understand again that they are also the real masters of this country – and will take it back. Good luck 2021, Slovenians.
