[Opinion poll] More than 73 percent of respondents believe that violators of covid-19 containment measures should be punished!

In addition to some individuals who behave irresponsibly from day to day, every Friday we can observe anti-government protesters gathering in the middle of Ljubljana, even though mass gatherings are banned at the expense of the growing number of new coronavirus infections. Given that this was also the case on Friday, many are wondering how it is possible for some to consider themselves so first-class that they dare to behave so irresponsibly and thus endanger public health. Judging by the results of a public opinion poll conducted for Nova24TV by the Parsifal agency, most people simply do not share the opinion of representatives of the irresponsible minority, who believe that measures aimed at the good of society can be violated.

When asked whether they should consistently punish all those who violate regulations to limit the spread of covid-19, nearly half (47 percent) of respondents answered that they should consistently punish all those who violate regulations to limit the spread of covid-19. 26.1 percent of respondents think that everyone should be punished, but with some exceptions, and only 24.7 percent of respondents think that they should not be punished.

Women are more in favor of consistent punishment

On the basis of gender, women (52.2 percent of respondents) are the ones who strongly support the view that violators of measures to limit the new coronavirus should be punished consistently. 41.8 percent of men believe that consistent punishment is necessary in case of violations. Compared to women, there is a higher share of those men (31.3 percent) who believe that violators should be punished, but with a few exceptions. The age population of 55 and over is the one that prevails in the view that violators should be punished consistently, the least inclined to consistent punishment are in the youngest age population 18-34 years. On the basis of education, those who have a basic education or less (65.6 percent of respondents) are most in favor of consistent punishment. They are followed by those with vocational and secondary education. Those with higher, high education or more are least in favor of punishment.

Due to non-compliance with the measures of some individuals, according to the infectologist and intensive care specialist dr. Tomaž Vovk the situation is very terrible. The standard in the intensive care unit is 1.7 patients per doctor, and currently those numbers are significantly higher, higher than ever, there has never been such a heavy workload, he said. The same goes for nurses, not just doctors. »It’s not just the numbers that matter, it’s the stories that matter. People are coming who are very sick.« Given that we achieved a record number of infections on Thursday – 834 and 242 people were hospitalized, it is up to each individual to think about their actions and take into account the measures of the profession to limit the new coronavirus. Namely, everyone can do the most for their own health and for the health of their loved ones. The measures will only work when we realize that only together can we reverse the upward curve.
