A high-speed train for the V4 for the next decade

By C.R.

One of the aims of the cooperation between the four countries of the Visegrád Group is to intensify mutual relations, which of course includes the improvement and sometimes even the establishment of road, air and rail links. The feasibility study for the Budapest-Warsaw high-speed train has just been completed and work will begin in the early 2030s.

Budapest-Warsaw in just five and a half hours

After the completion of this rail connection, the journey from Budapest to Pressburg (instead of the current 2 hours and 53 minutes) or Vienna (instead of 2 hours and 41 minutes) will only be two hours, to Prague (instead of 7 hours and 28 minutes) three and a half hours and to Warsaw (instead of 10 hours and 12 minutes) will only take five and a half hours, as the new high-speed train will travel at 250 to 350 km / h. In addition, this new V4 high-speed network will be directly connected to the existing network in Western Europe via Vienna and Prague.

Milan, Rome, Zurich, Munich, Frankfurt, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin and Hamburg will then also be accessible by high-speed trains from Budapest, Pressburg or Warsaw.

Faster than the motorway

The Hungarian Minister for Innovation and Technology, László Palkovics, of course welcomed the start of this project:

“ In addition to connecting the capitals of the Visegrád countries, this investment will connect the domestic high-speed network with the European network. Thanks to this new line, we can  […]  after Öden-burg  [Sopron],  Veszprém and to the Plat-tensee  [faster]  drive as on the highway. Work is expected to start in the early 2030s, but renovation of the existing tracks from Kelenföld to Törökbálint could start even earlier. ”
