PM Orban: Common sense prevailed, we protected Hungary’s sovereignty and Hungarians’ money

The European Union can only function successfully as a community of nations, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Monday. Common sense prevailed and we managed to thwart efforts to penalise countries that do not want to take in immigrants.

Last week’s summit of the European Council was a victory for common sense: “we have defended Hungary’s sovereignty and protected the money of Hungarians,” Viktor Orban told lawmakers in the Hungarian parliament on Monday. Hungary’s premier also thanked Poland for its friendship, perseverance,  and companionship.

“We won because we managed to achieve our goal that economic funds should not be tied to political conditions amidst the difficulties posed by the pandemic, as such conditions would simply hinder us in taking swift action,” PM Orban said.

Viktor Orban emphasized that common sense prevailed because, with this decision, they managed to preserve the unity of Europe, protected the European Constitution and averted the danger of imposing immigrants on Hungarians by budgetary means. They thwarted efforts to impose financial penalties on countries that do not want to take in immigrants, the prime minister said.

They also protected Hungarians’ money, making sure that Hungary will receive its fair share, he added. It’s become clear that the EU could only function succesfully as a community of nations, Viktor Orban concluded.
