The NGO ‘Doctors Without Borders’ has urged the German government to take in thousands of asylum seekers currently being held in facilities in Libya who they say are at risk because of military conflict in the region.

In a press release, the NGO urged Germany to take in a total of 3.800 migrants who the group described as being in ‘acute danger’ in detention facilities near the Tripoli – the country’s capital – since some are located close to military installations.

The CEO of the German Branch of Doctors Without Borders, Florian Westphal, claimed that the German government is responsible for the circumstance because of the EU’s continued support for the Libyan coastguard which returns migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea back to the country.

Westphal claimed that the transfer of migrants to Germany “has to be done immediately before the next airstrike takes place”.

According to the NGO, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya is currently holding 5,695 migrants.
